Smoking Policy

It is the policy of Northwestern University in Qatar to promote a smoke-free environment in the university building including university managed outdoor spaces.

NU-Q is dedicated to maintaining a safe and healthy community and working environment, improving indoor and outdoor air quality, and promoting the comfort of university students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Research findings show that tobacco use, including smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke, constitutes a significant health hazard.

Northwestern University in Qatar has adopted this policy to assure compliance with Qatar Foundation’s No Smoking Regulations, LEED Certification, and to promote the health and safety of its community.

Smoking or inhaling any tobacco or other smoking product, by any method, including, but not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, and Shisha is prohibited in all university areas, including, but not limited to, classrooms, seminar rooms, conference rooms, library, study and break-out rooms, student lounges, dining rooms, offices, staircases, storerooms, bathrooms, forum, atrium, auditorium, projection theater, screening rooms, studios, and newsroom.  It is prohibited on all balconies, terraces, and in courtyards. Smoking is also prohibited outdoors within 25 feet of all building doorways or openings.

Designated Smoking Areas

There are two Designated Smoking Areas that are located as per signage. Their locations are as follows:

The success of this policy depends on the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of smokers and non-smokers. It is the responsibility of all members of the university community to comply with this policy. Members of the university community should inform visitors, contractors, and service providers about this policy, as appropriate. This policy applies even in the absence of posted “No Smoking” signs and will be strictly enforced.
