Student Position: Research Assistant 4

The Pope did not wear Balenciaga. Filmmakers did not fake the moon landing. Elon Musk did not kiss a robot. Taylor Swift did not pose for sexually explicit images. Recently, however, lifelike images of these scenes created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) have spread virally online, threatening society’s ability to separate fact from fiction. And yet, it’s this very tension that lies at the heart of our fascination with AI, a feeling of apprehension and awe, of disgust and attraction, of worry and comfort.

Beneath the term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ lies a paradox. On one hand, ‘artificial’ invokes ideas of something fake, unnatural, synthetic, and insincere. A stark contrast to the lofty ideals of ‘intelligence’: truth, knowledge, and the very power to shape our world. The words themselves seem an incompatible mismatch. Can this oxymoronic union be anything but a distortion? This is the paradox that sits at the heart of a technology poised to redefine us, and the puzzle that underpins our spring 2025 exhibition. Curator, Jack Thomas Taylor, is looking for a researcher to join his curatorial team to work on this exhibition.

• Assist with the dissemination of tasks/responsibilities to other researchers.
