The below job descriptions have been developed to assist faculty and staff in determining the correct job description when advertising a student employment vacancy at NU-Q. The job descriptions specify the indicative level of responsibility, skill, job difficulty, or experience necessary to perform the tasks required by that position. Workforce timesheets need to accurately reflect the hours the student has worked. 

Please review the job titles and descriptions below and find the one that best fits your position needs and requirements. The below descriptions have been developed in consultation with NU-Q senior management. The purpose of the job description is to assist supervisors in creating job postings and selecting the correct job levels that correspond with the requirements of the vacancy.

Bookstore Assistant

Bookstore Assistant 1

Pay Rate: 45

Responsibilities: 

  • Operating day-to-day tasks within the bookstore such as running the register
  • Restocking products
  • Folding and steaming clothes
  • Displaying merchandise
  • Setting up and maintaining display cases
  • Assisting customers
  • Providing good customer service displaying knowledge of merchandise and professionalism
  • Other tasks as assigned

  • Fast learner

Bookstore Assistant 2

Pay Rate: 50

Responsibilities: 

  • Operating day-to-day tasks within the bookstore such as running the register
  • Coming up with innovative projects within the bookstore
  • Expanding our merchandise options by exploring and proposing different brands and products worldwide to be approved by Bookstore Manager
  • Provide excellent customer service displaying of knowledge of merchandise and professionalism and be able to assist with any problems BA1 employees might face with day-to-day tasks
  • Coming up with new bookstore initiatives frequently and looking for ways to develop, promote, and enhance the NU-Q bookstore
  • Taking on the leadership role within the bookstore by mentoring and training BA1 employees
  • Other tasks as assigned

Bookstore Assistant 3

Pay Rate: 55

Responsibilities:

  • Setting new goals and deadlines weekly for all bookstore employees
  • Provide excellent customer service displaying of knowledge of merchandise and professionalism and be able to assist with any problems BA1 employees might face with day-to-day tasks
  • Helping manage all bookstore operations
  • Delegate tasks to other student employees and raise any concerns to the Bookstore Manager in a timely manner
  • Taking on the leadership role within the bookstore by mentoring and training BA1 employees

Course Assistant

  • Coordinating library course reserves
  • Scheduling student presentations
  • Organizing and distributing learning materials

Department Assistant

Department Assistant 1

Pay Rate: 45

Responsibilities:

  • Staffing the front desk, and attending to queries from faculty, staff, students, and external visitors
  • Ability to handle various equipment within the department and, perform simple tasks like photocopying, scanning, bookbinding, etc.
  • Supporting the maintenance of the storage room.
  • Other tasks as assigned

Department Assistant 2

Pay Rate: 50

Responsibilities:

  • Creating posters
  • Assisting with event planning and logistics
  • Managing documents online (ex: recording and entering data into excel documents) as required by the professional staff members within the department
  • Organizing the storage room with minimal supervision
  • Other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Worked within the department for a minimum of one semester

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate an ability to multitask, work independently, initiate and follow-through on projects

Department Assistant 3

Pay Rate: 55

Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance to other student employees
  • Creating infographics and presentations as required by the professional staff members of the department
  • Provide logistical assistance with departmental events and initiatives
  • Other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Senior, Junior, or outstanding Sophomore
  • Minimum one-year experience within the department

  • Ability to manage assigned work by department with minimal supervision

Department Assistant 4

Pay Rate: 60

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and delegate tasks to the student staff from professional staff members of the department on a weekly basis
  • Research given topics and create summary reports to provide recommendations
  • Perform data analytics in a timely fashion as required
  • Training and mentoring other student employees
  • Ability to plan and organize events independently
  • Other tasks as assigned

Minimum qualification:

  • Senior or outstanding Junior
  • 2 or more years of experience within the department

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

IT User Support Assistant

IT User Support Assistant 2

Pay Rate: 50

Responsibilities:

  • Collects and documents customer requests and data points into the Service Desk ticketing system via a variety of mediums, including phone calls, emails, and IM chat sessions
  • Conduct basic troubleshooting via a series of questionnaires related to issues being reported into the Service Desk
  • Escalation of tickets to appropriate IT resources as needed
  • Resolve common problems such as username and password issues, menu navigation, verification of software and hardware requirements, etc.
  • Assist with computer imaging, including loads of existing images on NU-Q computers
  • Maintain NU-Q printers by responding to printer alerts and replacing toner as needed
  • Maintain and organize imaging room and other IT storage spaces
  • Set up and clear offices on departure/arrival of NU-Q faculty and staff
  • Help with basic troubleshooting of lab computers
  • Other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of MS Office suite, with primary focus on Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Basic knowledge of workflows, including navigation, as related to NU-Q’s ticket intake system
  • Must be in good academic standing with NU-Q
  • Must be able to lift 10 KGs
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Product suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some experience with customer service

IT User Support Assistant 3

Pay Rate: 55

Responsibilities:

  • Collects and documents customer requests and data points into the Service Desk ticketing system via a variety of mediums, including phone calls, emails, and IM chat sessions
  • Conduct troubleshooting via a series of questionnaires and independent thinking, related to issues being reported into the Service Desk
  • The incumbent should strive to resolve tickets with no further escalations necessary
  • Escalation of tickets to appropriate IT resources as needed
  • Assist with computer imaging, including loads of existing images on NU-Q computers
  • Must demonstrate independent thinking and execution in resolving commonly reported and more complex computer problems 
  • Maintain NU-Q printers by responding to printer alerts and replacing toner as needed

  • Assisting staff in user training workshops

Peer Tutor 1 - Writing Center

Pay Rate: 50

Responsibilities:

  • Acting as a writing tutor for students at NU-Q across classes, majors, and year groups
  • Occasional outreach activities or side projects such as visiting classes and conducting workshops may be required in conjunction with more experienced tutors
  • Must attend regular meetings, training, and evaluations
  • Provide writing assistance for students in all academic and non-academic areas
  • Other tasks as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidate must be recommended by a writing professor

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be self-driven and has native oral and written English proficiency
  • Good interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent writing skills, including a clear understanding of grammar
  • Exemplary ethics and integrity

  • Acting as a writing tutor for students at NU-Q, especially with higher classes (Juniors and Seniors)

Production Assistant

Production Assistant 1

Pay Rate: 50

Responsibilities:

  • Operating day-to-day tasks within the cage
  • Assist Production Support Specialists with their assigned tasks              
  • Assist customers with equipment check-outs and check-ins
  • Prepare and organize equipment to be checked out
  • Managing customer inquiries
  • Support the maintenance and organization of the cage
  • Other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Some experience with production equipment required
  • Sophomore level student or above

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Reliable; problem-solving skills, interest in technology, self-starter, and positive attitude required
  • Must be able to plan and manage time
  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing 20kg

Production Assistant 2

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Production Support Specialists with equipment demonstrations
  • Prepare equipment kits for classes and check outs
  • Assist in workshops held by Production Support Specialists
  • Supervise the cage during open hours when Production Support Specialists are not present
  • Assist Production Support Specialists with training new student employees
  • Other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum one-year experience within the Production Department

Research Assistant

Responsibilities:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Interest in the designated field of research
  • Ability to understand relevant material

  • Administrative experience and undergraduate-level familiarity with the subject matter

  • Ability to work successfully with faculty supervision in a collegial manner

Research Assistant 3

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and document findings using appropriate research methodologies
  • Prepare abstracts from sources
  • Contribute to the development of research strategies and techniques
  • Prepare materials/slides/PowerPoint presentations
  • Write summary research reports
  • Other administrative tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good academic standing; minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Junior or Senior

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years’ experience as an RA in the same of a related area

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Substantial coursework or experience in the field  
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to interpret the required materials and to perform successful research activities

Responsibilities:

  • Perform complex research tasks under the general direction of a supervisor
  • Write and edit materials for publication and presentation
  • Analyze and interpret data; perform statistical analysis; conduct interviews
  • Assist in designing and managing research projects
  • Manage and coordinate multiple projects in various stages of development
  • Help prepare IRB submissions/protocols
  • Assist with the dissemination of tasks/responsibilities to other NU-Q student employees
  • Other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Good academic standing; minimum of 3.5 GPA
  • Senior or Junior
  • Department major with minimum two years coursework and experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with statistics, background, computer programming skills

  • Opening and closing procedures
  • Interpretation of library computer information

  • Enforcing user policies and regulations; and be responsible for operation of a high use/high demand collection in absence of staff
  • Other tasks as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous clerical or library experience preferred

Student Library Assistant 3

Pay Rate: 55

Responsibilities:

  • Duties include working independently on complex demanding duties and complex data entry
  • Checking that materials are properly checked out
  • Interpreting, formulating, and coding bibliographic or authority data
  • Mentoring and leading other students with tasks
  • Other tasks as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Considerable specialized library experience required, including minimum one year of directly relevant experience
