Student Position: Communications Exchange Peer Advisor
The Evanston Qatar Support Office (QSO) seeks two current Communications majors in good standing to serve as peer advisors and main campus ambassadors to a group of up to 12 exchange students from Northwestern Qatar. The NU-Q Communications Exchange (Comm Exchange) students are in Evanston taking full time classes in winter and spring quarters every year.
The Communications Exchange Peer Advisors should expect to start training in November 2024 to prepare for students to arrive in January. The Peer Advisors should expect to help meet students at the airport and assist with move-in on January 4, 2025, and work through the students’ departure at the end of Spring quarter 2025.
Throughout Comm Exchange students time in Evanston, the Comm Exchange Peer Advisors will act as guides, mentors and friends to the comm exchange students. The Peer Advisors will help comm exchange students get to know main campus and the local area, introduce student groups, share opportunities for involvement on campus, provide resources for academic support, and lead excursions to explore different attractions in Chicago.
The Comm Exchange Peer Advisors should expect to participate in a minimum of two social activities per quarter with the students, including one organized by the Qatar Support Office and one organized by the Peer Advisors themselves. Peer Advisors should expect to work a somewhat variable schedule, on average 5 hours per week, which includes 1 “office hour” per week to meet with their assigned smaller group of comm exchange students. Additional hours may be required at the beginning of the quarter for student move-in and during key times to support social activities.
Peer Advisors will also be required to document some of their experiences using photos and videos and support other QSO student workers in developing a video to document the Comm Exchange students’ experiences.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Current Communications Major in good standing, Juniors or above preferred
- Manage time effectively
- Clearly communicate with a group of diverse students
- Coordinate activities and excursions
- Demonstrated campus and community involvement
- Video and photo editing
- Knowledge of Northwestern Evanston resources, traditions, and campus culture, a true Wildcat at heart
- Must be on campus no later than January 4, 2025
Preferred QUalifications:
- Previous experience as a Peer Advisor, especially International Peer Advisor
- International experience including international students or previous exchange
